By the time I get to Memphis

Well, it's time to think about the really important stuff. What music should I listen to on the way to Memphis? And on the way back?

Right now I'm thinking about Robert Johnson , Isaac Hayes , Guy Davis, and Muddy Waters.

I own all those cds I linked to there.

I've been thinking about buying that Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo collaboration also. You know, Graceland.

Do you have any suggestions on music to listen to while traveling to and from Memphis?

The title of this post is a takeoff on the famous Isaac Hayes song, "By the time I get to Memphis."

I read an interesting column about it earlier today.

By the way, did you know that
There is a girl in new york city
Who calls herself the human trampoline
And sometimes when I’m falling, flying
Or tumbling in turmoil I say
Oh, so this is what she means
She means we’re bouncing into graceland

Anything Stax. That is to say, anything Booker T and the MGs, if it's instrumentals you desire, or Otis Redding, if you need the same band with a kickass singer in front of it, and so on.

I love that you commented twice on your own blog.

I want to comment but can't think of any good running tunes.

"Ease on Down the Road"?

Of course, travel in general calls for Johnny Cash's "Orange Blossom Special"...

and my word for the day: fdhqotld

So here was the play list:

On the way to Memphis, I listened to

Paul Simon's album Graceland.
Local band Mama Jean's catchy cd. Too bad they're not playing much anymnore.
Trace Adkins' new cd "Songs about Me." Not so much songs about me as songs about him, but that's ok. I love that Honky Tonk Badonka Donk.
Muddy Waters, Live from Newport.
And then the sounds of radio stations in Memphis.

On the way home I listned to:
Isaac Hayes, Live at WAttstax;
Johnny Cash - a cd called "Hello I'm Johnny Cash." a great album, especially because it had that song Orange Blossom Special on it.
A Soul Christmas - one of the best songs was the first song - Back Door Santa by Clarence Carter of Stroking fame.
Country Cares for Kids - a benefit cd by country artists to raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Booker T and the M.G.s album "Green Onions"
and then I listned to a Rufus Thomas cd. You know Rufus "The Dog" Thomas who popularized The Funky Chicken. He's also a 60-minute man. Ha ha.
As I was driving into town, Rufus was singing Old McDonald Had a Farm.
