I think it's funny that you put the bit about not wanting to be in grad school on Silliman's blog. I'd have waited for a blog by someone in the academy...Criticism isn't only in college.
I don't even know who he is. I just saw your link. Honestly, I read all the comments and I just felt overwhelmed. I suppose my job is actually criticism in a way. And I do enjoy it. I even enjoy some poetry criticism. Did I tell you about the book of poetry criticism that I have, Walking Light by Stephen Dunn?It's got this great line: When people praise a poem that I can't understand, I always think they're lying.
By the way, you never answered my question on whether you believe in objective standards of beauty.
