Doctor's visit recap

I'm still recovering a bit from my camping adventure this weekend.

But I figure I must say something about my trip to the foot doctor today. I've blogged so much about it. But I'm tired and weary from sleeping out in the cold in a sleeping bag that wasn't all that warm when the temperatures got well below freezing.

Anyhow, here's the recap of the doctor's visit. I have flat feet and fallen arches. Maybe that's redundnat. Anyhow, this led to the diagnosis of sinus tarsitis. And now my foot is currently wrapped and I may get prescription orthotics. Depending on what the insurance will cover and how well this wrapping of the foot goes. Because if the insurance doesn't cover it, it's a $400 investment, as my foot doctor said.

Anyhow, right now I kind of want to take a nap.

That sounds awful! Are the orthodics $400?

It all depends on what the insurance will pick up.

I'm not sure that I can afford a second opinion. Or maybe I'm just not sure I want to spend money for one.

Maybe I'm just cheap but I wish there were some solution that involved strengthening the foot that did not involve spending a lot of money for orthotics. And that's even if it's not my money that we're spending.

Because if the insurance company is spending the money, someone is still spending. For some reason, it just doesn't sit right with me.

Remember: RICE
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Sit at home with your feet up and wrapped with ice! I tried doing a google search for stretches and exercises that would help, but wasn't certain enough that the ones I found fit what you needed to pass along the links. It's probably a good time to start doing your yoga and making sure you're all stretched, anyway :)

maybe i'll give up running and take up yoga for Lent.

that would be quite the change. I'll think about it.
I'm real leery of the prospect of $400 prescription orthotics.

It just feels wrong to me.

Welcome to the flat-footed club. You should bear in mind that the US Army has rejected our kind (my grandfather included) in times of war, because we're not well fit to march or jog long distances. You'd think that if it were a simple matter of strength training, the Army of all organizations would have figured it out by now. So no, I'm not sure it's something you can fix through habit.

Stupid question: have you tried motion-control shoes? I figure you did at least that much research, but I thought I'd ask.

Motion control and stability are a good combo in shoes. Of course, my feet take a beating. I stand on them for ten straight hours in a research lab daily, sometimes more. I walk on them, job, sprint, and have a secret:

spenco insoles, self-care, hot footbaths once a week, regimented rest days, biking and swimming to counteract the foot stress and trauma, good fats because the pads of our feet rely on the prospect of fatm, and sometimes that means meat. Sometimes, a good footrub from a good man :) sometimes just taking your mind off it, sometimes a new pair of shoes. There's a lot you can do, but my only advice is to take some time off, see how you feel and AVOID THERAPUTIC MEASURES UNTIL IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY because once you get on the orthotics bandwagon, you will not get off. I wish I had more time to write, hope it all comes out okay and see you on the road sometime!
